We have seen Hugh Jackman in many avatars, and in Real Steel, we see Hugh Jackman amidst robot boxers! Real Steel is a future-set story where robot boxing is a popular sport and we have a struggling promoter (Jackman) who thinks he's found a champion in a discarded robot. During his hopeful and eventful rise to the top, he also discovers he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father.
Charlie (Hugh Jackman) is a former boxer who is now into robot boxing. Charlie bets heavily on a robot, and loses out on both the bet as well as the robot. Charlie's son Max (Dakota Goyo) is under his mom's custody, and when she passes away, he is handed over to Charlie. Meanwhile, Charlie is forced to go on the run when his debts go way above his head, and he takes Max with him. Charlie gets a loan from his aunt, and buys another robot. Charlie and Max lose this robot too in a fight, and after that find an old, buried robot that was used as a sparring partner for other fighters. The bonding with this robot Atom, and the way they train it, and take it through fight after fight forms the rest of the story!
Hugh Jackman is in his element, and plays his part perfectly. Dakota Goyo has given a splendid performance as the zealous kid, who goes through many hardships and wants to know his Dad better. Dakota emotes very well, and has given life to the character Max! Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand, Hope Davis, James Rebhorn, Marco Ruggeri, and Karl Yune form the rest of the cast. The special effects have been superbly done, and the robot fight sequences make for some splendid visuals.
Real Steel is an action movie, that is sure to give an adrenaline rush to the viewers, and would surely appeal to Hugh Jackman's fans. Another interesting feature of the film is that most of the robot boxing fights were motion-captured using professional boxers, supervised by Sugar Ray Leonard. Get set to head over to a theatre near you to watch an action packed movie, that is sure to entertain you.
