Captain America: The First Avenger is primarily based on the early days of the Marvel Universe, and is set during the World War II. The movie is about a wannabe military aspirant, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who is deemed unfit for the armed forces because of his physical condition. Out of desperation, he volunteers to participate in a top secret experimental program that turns him into a super soldier known as Captain America, a super hero who is dedicated to defending America's ideals. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to wage war on Nazi Germany's secret research department, the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).
On learning of the success of the super soldier research project, Red Skull sends a spy and assassinates Dr. Erksine, the project head and the creator of Captain America! When Rogers comes to know of this, he tracks down the killer; that is when he learns of a nefarious plot hatched by Red Skull. Rogers decides that it's time for him to become Captain America, The First Avenger, and forms a unit of his own, to take on the villains. What follows, makes for engrossing viewing!
The simple, yet taut storyline is surely a plus for the movie. The absence of funny gimmicks sure plays a great role in enhancing the movie's reputation. All the characters have been cast to perfection, and they ensure that the liveliness of the movie is not lost at any stage. Director Joe Johnston has striven hard to ensure that the movie is not too hyped up with the superhero stuff, but is toned down with more reality than fantasy. All in all, Captain America: The First Avenger is a movie that stands head and shoulders above most of the recent super hero flicks, and is sure to keep you enthralled all the way.
Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely
