About The rum diary

Paul Kemp is an itinerant journalist who tires of New York and America under the Eisenhower administration and travels to Puerto Rico to write for The San Juan Star. Kemp begins the habit of drinking rum and becomes obsessed with the woman Chenault Paul finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean. Paul is challenged on many levels as he tries to carve out a more secure niche for himself amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction.
Very little has been heard about The Rum Diary, the new movie based on a work by gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. While anything that stars Johnny Depp will get its own level of high buzz, The Rum Diary has gone through its production and post-production with relatively little attention to it. That now changes with the movie's first trailer now released online.
Depp plays a New York journalist that picks up his traveling bags and gets a job working at a seedy Puerto Rico newspaper. Set in the 1950s, Depp's Paul Kemp meets a flashy American businessman (Aaron Eckhart) who has a beauty by his side (Amber Heard). While Kemp partakes in the local alcohol and illicit pharmaceuticals, he also discovers that Eckhart's business man is setting up a deal to monopolize the island at the expense of its local population. With danger from powerful men and the romantic moves of Heard's blonde femme fatale, Kemp has to make a choice between succumbing to the sins of the island or sober up and take down Eckhart and his capitalist troublemakers.
